My youngest son is always thirsty and can't get enough of the sweets.  I have banned candy and those Capri Sun drinks from my house, but this still continues.    He's only 5 and  very active.  Should I be worried?  Can they test Glucose levels on a child so young?  Thank you.

Hi There, Please Take your Son to the Doctor.  A simple blood test can be performed at any age.  This is my BEST Advice.  I would say to do this IMMEDIATLY!  Without a Blood test, either Fasting or not, there is NO way to know if there is a problem!  YOUR Doctor will be be able to determine if there is a problem!

And Good for you for limiting those sweets and Sugary Drinks!

Go Veggies and LOVE that Water!!

I agree with Leslie…

Also, for reference I have copied the symptoms from the Juvenile Diabetic Research Foundation: http://www.jdrf.org

What are the symptoms of type 1 diabetes?
The symptoms may occur suddenly, and include one or more of the following:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Drowsiness, lethargy
  • Sugar in urine
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Increased appetite
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Fruity, sweet, or wine-like odor on breath
  • Heavy, labored breathing
  • Stupor, unconsciousness

If you think you have diabetes, call a doctor immediately, and drink fluids WITHOUT SUGAR to prevent dehydration.

Thank you so much for your info.  I have taken my son to the doctor and we are awaiting the results of a fasting blood test.  I'll let you know how it turns out.  Thanks again.  I'm so glad that there is this site and people like you who are so willing to lend your expertice.  Thanks again.
